The church and cloister buildings were significantly damaged by the Hussite attack in 1421. Emergency repairs were started as late as in the late 16th century, when the octagonal tower with three cupolas was built. War events of the first half of the 17th century brought another disaster. The reconstruction was commenced after the great fire of 27th December 1681, which totally destroyed the previous partial repairs. That expensive Baroque reconstruction of the whole area lasted, including some breaks, nearly a century (1684 - 1777). New huge Baroque front with two towers was built. The fresco in the church chapel was made by Paolo Pagani, paintings in the summer cloister dining hall were made by František Řehoř Eckstein and Karel František Töpfer. Here we can also find works of Jan Jiří Etgens, who created church wall and ceiling paintings together with F. Eckstein, as well as works of Order artist Ignác Raab. The following sculptors contributed to the decoration: Ondřej Schweigl, Josef Antonín Winterhalder, František Hiernle and others. Interior stucco works were made by Baltazer Fontana. Wooden choir benches, which were engraved in approximately 1700, represent a jewel of the church decoration. The Church of Ascension of Virgin Mary was promoted to lesser Basilica in 1927.

Proti proudu času. Poutní místo a bazilika na Velehradě, hrad Buchlov, zámek Buchlovice a spousta dalších zajímavých míst vás čeká na každém kroku.
