The first written mention of Jews in Břeclav dates from the 15th century; a hundred years later, in Břeclav a large Jewish community existed with a synagogue and cemetery. Learned rabbis operated in Břeclav; in the economic sphere, the Kuffner family was well known, who owned a local sugar factory.

The synagogue was renovated in the 19 century using Moorish elements in the interior. After the extensive reconstruction it has been used for cultural and social purposes. A museum exhibition from the history of the local Jewish community is installed here; the interior serves as a gallery, concert hall and the venue of various social events.
